Football Legend Horst Eckel is to get an honorary grave in his home village of Vogelbach. This has decided by the municipal council of the association community Bruchmühlbach-Miesau after a report of the "Rheinpfalz".
The Football World Champion of 1954 was died on 3 December last year at the age of 89 years as the last World Champion of the 1954 team, who managed a historical success with the "Miracle of Bern".
Eckel's daughter Dagmar had complained that no honorary grave is to be granted to her father and said, "I think that's very ugly, especially as we would take care of the tomb. It's easy for Papa to get this appreciation, because he has Yes for Vogelbach, a lot done for all Germany. "
After the topic was the public, the municipal council dealt with at short notice. All factions advocated an honorary grave. Local Mayor Rüdiger Franz (SPD) was commissioned to clarify details with the family. Previously, it had been said, due to the significantly deficit budget of the local community and the existing strict budgetary requirements of the municipal supervision this had not happened.
An honorary grave is awarded by a municipality as award for the merit of a deceased and a reminder. The burial care can then be paid with public funds, but there are different regulations. The rest period can be extended beyond the usual time. Eckel was born in the 1300-inhabitant village of Vogelbach and lived there most recently with his wife Hannelore.
