Google Dachgesellschaft Alphabet has launched a first test attempt by Project Taara in Central Africa in recent days. The focus of the initiative is faster Internet for regions where the expansion of a glass fiber connection would cause immense costs for the providers. The choice fell on the gap between Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo and Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Both capitals are separated from each other by the river Congo - the crow flies is 4.8 kilometers. For people in Kinshasa, however, access to the Internet is much more expensive because providers would have to lay over 400 kilometers of cables around the river. Project Taara wants to offer a solution here. The team placed two stations with whom high-speed connections from Brazzaville to Kinshasa can become toured. And alphabet could celebrate great success at the first test attempt. Within 20 days, Project Taara has transferred more than 700 TB to data directly over the Congo. In addition, the availability of the connection was 99.9 percent.
However, Project Taara is still struggling with trouble with foggy conditions, because the optical transmission is not optimal here. Alphabet wants to collect weather data here in the future to determine the perfect locations for their stations. Project Taara uses the technologies that the team developed at Project Loon. Here, data with balloons over a distance of 100 kilometers in the air were transferred. After the end of January 2021, the Taara team now wanted to use the technology on the ground.
